Number one thing is viewpoint. Nature is a very beautiful and you can truly experiment on how to shoot it. You can shoot the small caterpillar inching its way up the lead. Use the features of your camera to help you with these great photos.
The natural world will hold a theme or even patterns. For example, find a singular deviation in a sea of pebbles. Maybe a small flower that is stubborn enough to grow amongst the pebbles. This is quite interesting to capture. There is a pattern somehow that you can find in the disarray of nature. The ability to spot these intricacies will provide you with wonderfully detailed photos.
Third be aware of the colors, textures and patterns on the natural scene. Spot the most fascinating color that you see in the scene before you and focus on that.
