Americans are not the only ones to celebrate the coming of a new baby by throwing a big party called ‘the baby shower’. This lovely custom exists all over the world. However, different countries adapt this event to fit their own culture.

A baby shower is a party organized for future mothers by her female friends and relatives to celebrate the coming of a new baby. The custom was originally established to exchange experiences and to impart advice about the birth and baby care. This is still important part of a baby shower, but today this event is now more informal and lighthearted. Baby showers also revolve around presents that guests bring for the young mother.

The baby shower is celebrated in different forms in different countries. In some places, like Russia and Ethiopia, it is even held after the baby is already born. In Afghanistan, family and friends normally have a big party and feast on the sixth night after the baby is born to congratulate the new parents and the grandparents. In Dominican Republic, a baby shower is a big fiesta, with dancing and games. When the young mother opens her gifts all the ribbons and bows are made into a hat for the baby’s father.

In many countries, a baby shower is a big event, organized and coordinated by one of the young mother’s mom, friends, or a relative. They send out the baby shower invitations and organize the party, which often includes games, party favors and food.

In many countries, baby shower gifts have become a big business and there are many choices available. The most popular items are clothes, toys, toiletries, baby strollers, and food and treats. These presents are for both for the mother as well as her baby. There are also baby shower baskets, with a choice of items, for those who cannot decide what to buy.

The baby shower is one of those lovely old customs that exists all over the world. The widespread nature of this custom makes us are aware of how similar we all are, at least in things that matter, like our children and their future.
